Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure that orthopaedic surgeons use to see inside a joint and treat problems there. A small incision is made in the patient's skin by the orthopaedic surgeon, who then inserts pencil-sized instruments with a small lens and lighting system to magnify and illuminate the structures inside the joint. Light is sent through fibre optics to the end of the arthroscope that is inserted into the joint. The surgeon can view the interior of the joint through this tiny incision as opposed to the larger one needed for open surgery because the arthroscope is connected to a tiny camera. The surgeon can see, for example, the entire knee thanks to the arthroscope's camera, which projects the image of the joint onto a video monitor. This makes it possible for the surgeon to see the cartilage and ligaments beneath the kneecap. Before performing any required repairs or adjustments, the surgeon can determine the degree or type of damage.
